Architecture has the power and ability to change peoples lives.
All over the world, people live in poorly designed, poorly constructed, and poorly maintained buildings. Architecture, and architects more specifically, have the ability to design, construct, and maintain houses that alleviate these issues and have a lower cost bubble. But we donʼt. We charge more.
Good design should not cost more. Good design is more efficient, good design can be built with less material, good design can perform better. Everything inherent to good design should in actuality lower the cost of buildings, and thusly lower the cost of architecture.
In Sub-Saharan Africa, reiforced concrete construction is typically disasterous, built with low budgets, no governement oversite. In an effort to change this, I spent the summer in Kenya, along with a fellow architectural graduate student, helping imporve the constrcution of the Agape Life Academy.
